Balticovo on the Path to a Sustainable Future: CO2 Emission Accounting and Reduction

The accounting and reduction of CO2 emissions are crucial for promoting sustainable development and preparing for future regulations. Balticovo AS has already conducted an analysis of its carbon footprint to better understand and manage its environmental impact. We are proud that our emission levels are comparable to industry standards, and we are committed to working on resource efficiency and collaborating with suppliers to further improve our results.

Preliminary results indicate that Balticovo's emission levels are comparable to those of other companies in the egg production industry. Key data for 2023:
? Producing one ton of eggs generates 3.21 tons of CO2 equivalent emissions.
? The three largest sources of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, accounting for 93.2% of the company's carbon footprint in 2023, are:
▫️ Scope 3: Indirect GHG emissions from purchased goods and services – 85.3%.
▫️ Scope 2: Indirect GHG emissions from purchased electricity – 4.8%.
▫️ Scope 1: GHG emissions from manure management – 3.1%.

Key Points:

  • Collaboration with Suppliers:
The majority of CO2 emissions come from Scope 3 — indirect emissions in the value chain, which include logistics, suppliers, product use, and other external sources. This is typical for many companies. While Balticovo will continue focusing on renewable resources and resource efficiency, these calculations highlight the importance of working closely with suppliers to improve overall CO2 emission metrics.

  • Start Calculations Early:
It is crucial for companies to begin calculating their emissions without delay, as the process requires interpreting existing data and performing calculations. This takes time and expertise.

  • Enhanced Collaboration:
When requesting data from various departments, the initial response is often, "No, we don't have such data," particularly regarding Scope 3. However, through collaboration, it becomes clear that this data can be obtained. This initiative has improved communication and cooperation between Balticovo's departments, as gathering previously uncollected information was necessary.

  • Compliance with Regulations:
Proactively calculating CO2 emissions ensures the company's readiness for future regulations and reporting requirements.

Sustainability is a cornerstone of Balticovo's operations, and we will continue working towards more efficient resource use and emission reduction at every stage of our activities. Together with our partners and suppliers, we are building a greener and more sustainable future.
